and the winner is...

I shall heretoforth be blogging at... eclectic domestic.

eclectic domestic will be my own scatterbrained collection of projects, adventures, recipes, green living efforts, plus moments of my everyday life with my family peppered in.

PKHaE will remain here, untouched, in the likely event that I have a second egg to hatch in the future.

I may go back and fill in important moments so as to have a complete blog for Squirrel to look back on one day, as was the intended goal. We'll see.

Hooray!

Clearing out the cobwebs

Well as of March 26 I was negative 5 months pregnant.

Maelyn Leigh made her way into the world at 3:02 p.m. on Tuesday, October 26. I'll spare you the details, but labor lasted for about 10 hours, 2 of that being pushing... with an epidural. She was 8 pounds and 6 ounces, 21.5 inches long, had a surprising shock of jet-black hair and knew just what to do when it came to eating.

Maelyn at 5 days old.

She still knows what do at mealtime, and although the hair is getting blonder by the day there's still a lot of it, save of course for the "back is best" bald spot. As of now she's learning to sit up and expanding her culinary interests to sweet potato and rice cereal - carrots debuting next week.

This is quite a succinct update considering how much time I've skipped, but there it is. The squirrel is here, happy and healthy. And as suspected, completely changing my life and my outlook on it.

It's been requested by people I can count on 2 hands that I keep blogging. So here I am to announce that I will keep blogging... somewhere else. By that I mean under some other name, to be announced later. So stay tuned! I'll have the name squared away by Wednesday.

Maelyn at 5 months old.

The Final Countdown

I know, it's the biggest pregnancy cliche... the final countdown. But I have had this song in my head all week and I feel the need to torture you all with it.

Our 34 week appointment was yesterday - Squirrel is still locked and loaded, head down, kicking like crazy and getting ready for blast off. Joshua and I are both getting more and more anxious by the day... mostly excited to meet her. Everything important that she needs we already have, but I do want to get the rest of the nursery decor done up and picture perfect. Plenty of time, right? Right!? No? Yeah, I know.

Excuses, excuses

This time, I neglected the blog not only because I'm just fabulously busy, but because our Internet at home has been all kinds of wonked out. We went ahead and bought a new fancy router that should last us a while, hopefully longer than 2 years like all the others we've ever had.

Tonight there will be a big update, including pictures! Once again I'll backdate everything, mostly for my own sake, and for Squirrel's too. One day she will read his blog.

Pregnancy Photoshoot, or Why I Hate Modeling

I've always been hyper-critical of myself in pictures... and I've always hated taking pictures. These are my favorites that Joshua captured. I wish the ones in the black dress had turned out a bit better though... I look much more at home in the jeans and t-shirt.

But that's pretty indicative of my personality anyway. This is me at 30 weeks.

So much to update...

It's official. I am The Suck at blogging.

Then again a lot has happened.

In no particular order:

I don't have The Beetus. Joshua started school again. Squirrel's room is painted. Squirrel has a crib. Some of my favorite people are throwing parties for Squirrel. Everyone is still trying to figure out Squirrel's name. I keep growing. Squirrel keeps growing. Squirrel has no more room to move. Squirrel is still of average size.

I will share more on these things in their own posts, backdated, to follow immediately.

The crib has landed!

Much like painting, furniture assembly at the Heerssen household is never a good thing. Inevitably, the man of the house will misread directions or forget a critical step and end up having to backtrack, leaving the woman of the house harping out of frustration and reading the instructions to him for the remainder of the project. We were reminded of this unhappy ritual when we recently purchased an IKEA entertainment center. If you've ever purchased anything from IKEA, well I don't have to explain the measure of desperation those cryptic assembly guides and small wooden pegs will create in the pit of your soul. For the rest of you, use your imagination.

Thankfully, our crib is not from IKEA. Joshua's parents were sweet enough to purchase our crib for us and have it delivered to our house for our assembly enjoyment. I use that word loosely.

Step 1 - Unwrap the pieces. Scatter the pieces. Decipher the instructions.

Step 2 - Begin. Let the cats help if they want.

Step 3 - Give the female the instructions for deciphering for the remainder of the project. Continue.

Step 4 - 90% completion. Assemble the Drawer Of Awesome.

It is important that I mention here that this drawer was 50% the reason I decided on this particular crib. I am a sucker for practical storage.

Step 5 - Completion!

Step 6 - Move into temporary position. Apply temporary ornamentation.

Step 7 - Insert baby here.

At the end of the day it wasn't all that bad really. It could have been worse... we didn't need to glue any critical pieces together so it was a win in my book. Also a win: the now undeniable fact that the queen bed will not fit in Squirrel's room along with the rest of her goodies. Which I knew from the beginning. Not that I'm bragging or anything.
